Year 1

Year 1 is the start of our full curriculum, where pupils will begin more formal learning.

The core subjects of English, mathematics, computing and science are taught alongside the foundation subjects of history, geography, art, music and religious education. As this can be a big change for some pupils, the afternoons of our first term are often more creative and playful, similar to Reception. The Year 1 day runs from 9.00 am to 3.15 pm.

Every child feels known and valued, develops confidence and is encouraged to treat others with respect.

We encourage peer critiquing of pupil’s work to build confidence and polite communication between pupils. We begin formally assessing pupils in Year 1 which contributes to the academic tracking within school. Full time assistance is available if we begin to recognise an individual child’s need for additional support.

A personalised curriculum allows every child to develop their most effective learning style, through a combination of individual study and group work.
